Covering the military as journalists will be discussed March 17

“Covering the Military: A Conversation on the Challenges of Military Journalism” will be presented via Zoom webinar at 6:30 p.m. March 17, The event is sponsored by Ripon College’s Center for Politics and the People and the center’s Student Advisory Board.

Rhett Cunningham ’22 of Ripon, Wisconsin, and Luis Aragon Miranda ’23 of Monroe, Wisconsin, will be the student moderators.

The webinar is free, but registration is requested at ripon.edu/military.

The deadly siege of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 raised new questions about the U.S. military’s role in the nation’s government and politics: What can and should troops do in situations of unrest and how are they called up?

Three members of the staff of Military Times will participate:

  • Managing editor Howard Altman is an award-winning editor and reporter who was previously the military reporter for the Tampa Bay Times and Tampa Tribune where he covered such topics as the United States Central Command, United States Special Operations Command and United States special operations forces. He is the father of Payton Altman ’22.
  •  
  • Digital editor Sarah Sicard previously served as editor of the Army Times and also done work for National Defense Magazine, Task & Purpose, Defense News, Fast Company, Business Insider and Adweek.
  •  
  • Staff reporter Kyle Rempfer focuses on writing about the U.S. Army. He served an enlistment as an Air Force Special Tactics combat controller and Joint Terminal Attack Control.
