Bicycling for Earth Week and Beyond
As Ripon College continues to celebrate Earth Week, Ric Damm, head coach of the Red Hawks cycling team, is encouraging Ripon faculty, staff, students and alumni to carry the momentum of the cause throughout the summer by riding a bicycle.
According to Damm, the 2013 National Bike Challenge is a free and fun program to help people across the United States improve their health, save on transportation and protect the environment. The Challenge is a free and easy way to encourage the Ripon College community to ride more while competing on a local, state and national level, said Damm.
The program runs for five months: May 1, 2013 – September 30, 2013. Participants can score points individually and for Ripon College simply by riding their bikes. Rides for transportation and recreation both accrue points, though transportation rides score more points.
Participants can sign up and log their miles via the National Bike Challenge website: http://www.nationalbikechallenge.org
When creating an account, simply type in Ripon College as the name of your employer or college/university and your miles will add up for the College’s total.
By logging miles, participants are also eligible for prizes. The grand prize is a new bicycle from Trek.
In 2009, Kimberly-Clark Corporation created an internal Bike Challenge for its more than 50,000 employees. With the help of the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin, the Challenge was successfully piloted in Wisconsin at the state-wide level in 2011. The Bike Challenge, then called the Get Up & Ride National Bike Challenge, went national in 2012. More than 30,000 individuals participated, riding 12 million miles.
In 2013, organizers aim to have 50,000 riders pedaling 20 million miles from May 1 to Sept. 30. The challenge is open and free to anyone who lives in the U.S. or works for an organization with U.S. employees.
The lead sponsor is Kimberly-Clark Corporation and the Challenge is organized and presented by the League of American Bicyclists.
