Chamber-jazz quintet performs at Ripon College Oct. 11

Douglas Detrick’s AnyWhen Ensemble will perform Saturday, Oct. 11, as part of the Chamber Music & Jazz at Ripon series presented by Ripon College. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Demmer Recital Hall, C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts, on the campus.

Tickets may be purchased by calling 920-748-8126.

This chamber-jazz quintet performs bold new compositions that integrate chamber music conception with jazz spontaneity.

“We believe that great music can happen anywhere, anyhow, anywhy and anywhen — ours is fitting music for this bright and rushing world,” the ensemble states.

The ensemble will be performing music from its first album, “Walking Across,” and its third album, “The Bright and Rushing World.”

“Walking Across,” released in 2008 on 8Bells Records, is the debut recording of the ensemble. This collection of original music, all by Detrick, is inspired by bridges all over the world, from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Centralbron in Stockholm and the Steel Bridge in Portland, Oregon, all of which the composer has walked over, driven across or sailed under.

“The Bright and Rushing World,” called “ … impres¬sively clear, inven¬tive and com¬pelling” by George Grella’s Big City Blog, is a 10-movement suite composed by Detrick that was commissioned by Chamber Music America. This suite’s dynamic movements are all connected by a single, ever-present theme.

The AnyWhen Ensemble was awarded the New Jazz Works and Presenting Jazz grant from Chamber Music America in 2011. This extremely competitive grant, attracting more than 250 applicants every year, commissioned a new work by Detrick called “The Bright and Rushing World.”

The group has performed at the Jazz Gallery and the Stone in New York, and on festivals including the Festival of New Trumpet Music curated by Dave Douglas, and the Is That Jazz? Festival in Seattle, Washington. The group also has performed and given master classes at colleges across the country.
