Shakepeare’s Cymbeline to run Nov. 12-15 in Benstead

Join the party! Be part of the celebration of Shakespeare’s 450th birthday this year by seeing Ripon College Theatre’s production of Cymbeline. Cymbeline, Shakespeare’s fairy tale full of wonder and imagination, will be performed Wednesday, November 12 through Saturday, November 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Benstead Theatre. The tickets are free, but reservations should be made by calling 920-748 – 8791 or [email protected].

Appearing in Cymbeline are: JaneMarie Erickson, Stephen Umhoefer, Anders Goodwin, Stephanie Nilson, Brennan Kane, London Mosher, Kevin Whiteneir, Noelle Korzeniewski, David Firari and Brian Frisch. The costume designer is Susan McDaniel Hill and the set and lighting designer is John Dalziel.

Cymbeline is one of the last of Shakespeare’s plays, a work that combines elements of romance, tragedy, comedy and history. Imagine Romeo and Juliet with a happy ending, Othello where the jealousy doesn’t end in tragedy, King Lear where the king is reunited with his daughter and you have some idea of the marvels of Shakespeare’s Cymbeline. It is a unique play, and the Ripon College Theatre is presenting it in a unique way. Director Kenneth Hill says, “We are using Shakespearean techniques and combining them with acting drawn from improvisation and story theatre. In Shakespeare’s Globe theatre, the actors talked directly to the audience, the audience was visible in the English sun or gloom. In our modern production, the actors will talk to you as well. There is no illusion that this is historical reality, the production is a fairy tale, a story we are sharing with you.”

As part this production and the celebration of Shakespeare’s 450th birthday, Ripon College Assistant Professor of English Ann Pleiss Morris will be presenting a talk titled “‘We’ll mannerly demand thee of thy story’: Cymbeline, Storytelling, and the Place of Fairy Tales in Shakespeare” on Tuesday, November 11, at 4:15 p.m. in Room 147 of the Rodman Center for the Arts. This talk is free and no reservations are needed.
