New York Times Best-Selling Author Dan Egan Presents “The Devil’s Element: Phosphorus and a World Out of Balance”

February 15th: 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm @ Great Hall

In Egan’s major work of explanatory science and environmental journalism, he investigates the past, present, and future of phosphorus, which has been called “the oil of our time.” Among other issues, Egan examines how our overreliance on phosphorus causes toxic algae blooms and “dead zones” in waterways and how diminishing access to phosphorus threatens the food system worldwide—which risks rising conflict and even war.

Egan is a native of Green Bay, Wisconsin. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1989 with a history degree and from the Columbia School of Journalism. He has been the Great Lakes reporter for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and the Brico Fund Journalist in Residence at the Center for Water Policy at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s School of Freshwater Sciences.

The event will be moderated by Stephanie Prellwitz, CEO and Executive Director of the Green Lake Association, and Dr. Bryan Nell, Assistant Professor of Chemistry.
