Award-winning author will read April 27 in virtual Visiting Writers presentation
April 28th: 12:00 am - 1:30 am @ Zoom
Sundberg’s memoir, Goodbye, Sweet Girl: A Story of Domestic Violence and Survival, was published in 2018 by HarperCollins. It has been praised as “heartbreaking, breathtaking in its scope, and urgently truthful in its harrowing and tender examination of when empathy fails—and when it wins,” by the Los Angeles Review and “bursting with such heartfelt, beautifully crafted scenes, is a gift for those who’ve experienced the pain of growing up and out of abusive relationships and a guide for those who seek insight and understanding,” by the New York Journal of Books.
Her essays and other writings have appeared in Alaska Quarterly Review, Denver Quarterly, Guernica, The Los Angeles Review, Gulf Coast, Departures in Critical Qualitative Research, Good Housekeeping, Glamour, Psychology Today and other publications. She particularly likes to write about the environment and the uneasy relationship between people and place.
“It Will Look Like a Sunset” was anthologized in Best American Essays 2015 and other essays have been listed as “notables” in Best American Essays 2013, 2016, and 2018.
Sundberg is an assistant professor of English at Ashland University in Ohio. She has an MFA in creative writing from West Virginia University and a Ph.D. in creative writing and English studies from Ohio University, and she has been the recipient of grants and fellowships from Vermont Studio Center, A Room of Her Own Foundation, Dickinson House and the National Endowment for the Arts.
