Meet Ian Stepleton
- B.A. in English, Ripon College
I am an adjunct instructor of journalism as well as a Ripon College graduate (1998). I teach three courses: IDS 211 (Journalism 1), IDS 213 (a workshop course for the College Days newspaper) and IDS 215 (Hollywood Journalism vs Real-World Reporting). My teaching is informed by my more than two decades of experience as a local journalist, including 14+ years as editor of the Ripon Commonwealth Press (where I started as a reporter in 2000). During that career, I earned 50+ first-place awards for writing, photography, design and more in the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Better Newspaper Contest, and led the Commonwealth to multiple Best Weekly Newspaper honors. I have taught journalism at Ripon College since August 2016, and was honored with the Faculty/Staff Mentor Award in 2018. Currently, in addition to my adjunct role at Ripon College, I serve as a public relations coordinator for an area library.
What is something you’ve experienced that makes Ripon College special?
The close relationship between faculty and students at Ripon College is special. Students get to know their professors well, seeing them both in the classroom and in the community, while professors go out of their way to truly get to know their students.
Briefly tell us about a significant experience you’ve had at Ripon College in teaching.
Several of my students have gone on to work in journalism after graduating, whether just for a summer or for years. Seeing my students use what they learned in my courses and apply it to their careers has been especially rewarding.
What teaching and learning techniques work best for you?
I first worked in journalism for many years before coming to Ripon College to teach. Bringing my real-world experiences into lessons helps students better understand the concepts I teach by putting them into a context that goes beyond the classroom.
