Old Master Portraits | Permanent Collection
Two 17th Century portraits by Anthony van Dyck are on permanent view in the Foyer Gallery of the C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts at Ripon College.
The two paintings depict Sir Roger Townshend (1628-1648) and Princess Amalia of Solms-Braunfels (1602-1675), who assertively look at us as we look back at them. They were rendered with technical mastery by Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641), one of the greatest painters of that era, perhaps with assistance from his workshop.
Learn more about the history of these paintings in this essay from Travis Nygard, associate professor of art history and director of the Caestecker Art Gallery.
