RAVE Mobile Safety
FAQs
Why are we doing this?
The leadership of Ripon College concluded that our emergency communication would be more effective in a real emergency using a system like Rave.
Does it cost me anything?
The only cost to the user would be for text messages received from Rave when you do not have a texting plan, typically $0.10-$0.20 per message. Otherwise, there is no cost to registered users.
Do other colleges like Ripon use this kind of system?
Yes. Essentially all ACM campuses are already using Rave or a similar system for emergency notification. Rave works with hundreds of colleges and universities around the country, including UW-Madison.
Why am I being opted in?
We assume most people will want to be part of the communications chain in the event of an emergency, for their safety and the safety of others. The automatic opt-in is a well-established best practice for maximizing the effectiveness of an alert service. You may opt out at any time.
How do I opt out?
To stop/prevent getting messages, you may login at https://www.getrave.com/login/ripon site and remove your number, or text the word, “STOP” to 67283.
What if I don’t have a texting plan?
Almost any mobile phone can receive text messages if the user enables it. Depending on your provider, you may be charged $0.10-$0.20 per text in such cases. If you disable texting entirely, you will only receive the email from Rave, so we encourage you to enable texting on your phone, at least when you are on campus.
How will I identify incoming messages from Rave Alert?
You will be sent messages from what are known as short codes. The messages will come from either 67283 or 226787. We encourage you to save these numbers into your phone so you will recognize them when messages are sent. Some smaller carriers do not support short code messaging. For these carriers, you will receive messages from @getrave.com.
What type of messages will I receive?
Ripon College will only send you messages related to emergencies. You will never receive advertisements and your information is never provided to advertisers.
Who can subscribe to/use the service?
Any student, staff or faculty member of Ripon College can subscribe (or unsubscribe) to the Rave Alert service. Community leaders and emergency officials in our area will also be invited to register.
What is my username?
Your username should be your Ripon College email address and your password is whatever you set when you sign up.
What mobile phone carriers are supported?
All U.S. mobile carriers are supported.
What if my cell phone number changes?
If your mobile number ever changes, please login to https://www.getrave.com/login/ripon and update your contact details.
What if my cell phone provider changes?
If you keep the same mobile number, and simply change cell phone provider, you do not have to change anything. It may take several weeks, however, for your mobile provider to update the Rave Alert system. During that time it is possible that you will not be able to receive messages unless you login to update your carrier information.
Will I receive advertisements or text messaging SPAM?
No, never. We respect your privacy and you will never receive anything besides official Ripon College emergency communications.
What happens if someone attempts to respond to the text message?
The inbound message is logged and is available via a downloadable report. This is a key part
of the solution, allowing the sender to solicit critical information about the recipients. This
enables an alert to ask a question, such as “Do you need help?”
How do you handle delivery of messages to international phone numbers?
Currently international text messaging is only supported via SMTP. Recipients enter their
international number address as their preferred email address. There is no phone number
validation process for international numbers.
How do you secure student phone numbers and information?
Student phone numbers and profiles are stored in Rave’s internal databases at secure
collocation facilities. Profile information is inaccessible on Rave’s site to users outside the
school and guarded from external parties by both Rave’s and the school’s secure authentication
systems. Rave maintains a strict privacy policy to protect user information.
What happens if I graduate or otherwise leave Ripon College?
Students may opt-out of Rave at any time. Graduates and students/faculty/staff who transfer or leave will be removed from the Rave system.
What kinds of contact info does Rave store per user?
Rave stores school email addresses, preferred email addresses and mobile phone numbers if provided. Additional attributes such as college, graduation year and residence hall or building can also be saved for use in targeted alert messaging.
What does Rave do to guarantee uptime?
Rave’s server facilities are located in multiple geographically-distributed collocation facilities with
independent electrical supplies and redundant data connections to multiple internet backbones.
The servers themselves are under 24/7 automated monitoring with any issues immediately relayed
to our systems team. In addition, alert functionality is constantly tested end-to-end by
automated server and handset tools, as well as further guaranteed by manual checks several
times a week.
